CULTURE
The History and
Culture of the Nibutani Ainu
The town of Biratori is home to living Ainu culture unique to the Saru River basin. This is the wellspring of Nibutani-ita and Nibutani-attus, Hokkaido's only Traditional Craft Products recognized by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Nibutani Kotan is a modern center for Ainu culture, and it holds the Biratori Municipal Nibutani Ainu Culture Museum, a gathering of traditional cise houses, and shops selling authentic Ainu crafts. The nearby Takumi no Michi Street of Artisans is lined with Ainu artisan workshops.
